Hitchens debates Mark Danner on Iraq

Written by Steve Rhodes

On Tuesday, January 28th there will be a free debate in Berkeley between Christopher Hitchens and Mark Danner at 7:30 pm at Zellerbach Hall. It should be an interesting exchange.

It is also supposed to be shown on WGBH in Boston (I don't know the details yet) and probably will be broadcast on the Commonwealth Club's NPR radio show and available in real audio on their website.

Danner's op-ed opposing war against Iraq appeared in the New York Times last October. He is a staff writer at the New Yorker and teaches at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He has done some of the best writing and reporting on international issues including on the Balkins and a book-length article in the New Yorker on the massacre at El Mozote in El Salvador. He has also worked on documentaries on Bosnia and Haiti for ABC News.

Hitchens probably needs no introduction. He is the 2003 I.F. Stone Fellow at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Much of his recent writing on Iraq (and other topics) can be found here.

There is also a webcast of his November discussion with Mother Jones co-founder Adam Hochschild on "Fault Lines: Rights, Wrongs & Responsibilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Palestine, and The Nation."

This debate was listed everywhere as 'free' with no mention that it was admittance with a ticket only. After driving for four hours we were turned away at the door so Jerry Brown and Sharon Stone and other worthless worthies could hobnob about. Pass it on to those responsible that it was not a civic event but an elitist gathering of assholes.

I'm sorry you drove all that way, but it was free. There were some tickets held at will-call for people from the j-school, but most were distributed there.

My friend arrived about 7 pm and we were able to get 2 tickets without a problem though it did seem full by the time it started.

The entire debate is online in real audio and an hour version will be broadcast on the Commonwealth Club's radio program.

Berekeley now has a video webcast of the debate.

Salon covered the debate and earlier that day Hitchens and Danner were on a San Francisco public radio program. You can listen (direct real audio link).

On Feb. 6th, Danner and John Arquilla will discuss Why We Can't Win the War on Terror (...and how we might still avoid losing) at the Berkeley J school.

John Arquilla, the author (with David Ronfeldt) of Networks and Netwars: The Future of Terror, Crime and Militancy, is associate professor of defense analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where he teaches the history of special operations, the revolution in military affairs, and information-age conflict. His other books include Lessons from the War with Saddam Hussein, Dubious Battles, From Troy to Entebbe, and (also with Ronfeldt) Swarming and the Future of Conflict.

This is airing on the Commonwealth Club on KQED FM Friday at 8 pm in San Francisco, so I imagine it will be on other stations carrying the Commonwealth Club soon.

I appreciated the common sense logic of
Christopher Hitchens !

It is a shame that Liberals Like Mark Danner are listened to by our young impressionable people .

This war with Islam is not going to go away by wringing our hands ... Mr. Dumbhead Danner What will your position be in the New Islamic World ? Let me answer that for you the best you can expect is .... Second Class Citizen ( which by the way is what you are now ) ... are you so stupid as to think you will continue with the life sytle you have now ?

"The last time the French asked for more proof it came marching into Paris under a German flag."

Are you a Good Person ?

Here is a modern day miracle for you !

Israel was dispersed among all nations !

The Bible scoffers before 1948 said it could never be a nation again .. Hitler tried to stop it ... when its time came ... Israel a
modern nation ... speaking Hebrew a lost language ... The whole world fighting over this seemingly worthless piece of real estate .. Palestine will not prevail against Israel .

Why ?

Because God said they would not. Why because they are shedding innocent blood ... Bible Prophecy ... happening ... now !

THE PROMISED MESSIAH

The promised Messiah of the Jews and the Redeemer of His people and also the whole world, "whosoever will may come". Through His death on the Cross and His resurrection from the grave, He paid for transgression, ended the power of sin, made reconciliation for iniquity, brought in everlasting righteousness, fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament, and was the anointed Holy One.

Every person who reads and believes the prophets of the Old Testament should recognize Jesus as the true Messiah. Clearly, He fulfilled the prophecy of Daniel 9:24 through 26 exactly as God prophesied hundreds of years before. Christianity is a faith built upon the clear evidence that God is working in history through Jesus Christ.

Those who reject Christ do so in the face of compelling facts and demonstrations of God's power.

Omar Ahmad, co-founder of CAIR: "Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth."

Is there a Creator (GOD)?

I think there is because Evolution is mathmatically impossible !

In Fact science says 50 things have to happen all at once for life to exist as we know it.

We are created, what does God require from us ?

Keep his law, that seems fair and if we think about it , the best thing for us and everyone else .

What are his laws ?

The Bible is 66 books, written by 36 different authors over 1600 years,
in 13 different countries and on 3 different continents. Inspired by God!
Long odds for coincedence.

The Bible has foretold that all these things will happen just before Messiah
comes back to stop war and give us peace. No one on earth will be able to say
we did not know.

Jesus Madman and Lair or God in the form of man ? Cannot be a good man and be a lair ... which your choice.

John 14:6
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
(Jesus says if you have seen me you have seen God)

Take this test are you a good person by Gods standards ?

"The fool has said in his heart there is no God"

Don't be a fool.

Liberal Dim Bulb telling others to "Don't be a fool" is beyond irony.

Watched the LA TIMES book festival "debate" live on CSPAN today. Quite a row.

Hitchens looked like the Pillsbury Doughboy about to be shoved into an oven, and he sounded like a door to nowhere coming off its hinges.

The boy has lost his mind.

Man's way leads to a hopeless end -- God's way leads to an endless hope.

Proverbs 26:
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

What is God's definition of a Fool ?

"Fool" in Scripture does not denote a mentally deficient person but rather one who is arrogant and self-sufficient, one who orders his life as if there were no God. See e.g. Luke 12:16-12 The rich man was not mentally deficient, but he was a "fool" because he supposed that his soul could live on the things in the barn, no thought to his eternal well-being.

"The Fool has said in his heart there is no God"

Puny man can rant and rave all he wants He can pretend no one hears ... but that will not change the course of things ...

"luck tends to favor the prepared mind."

Two Options
God will pardon your sin through Jesus Christ or God will punish your sin in Hell.

Pretending to be superior does not make you superior ... !

The Middle East is where the answer to life come from ... have you studied for yourself or ...

Back to the Ignoramus Viewpoint

SO SYSTEMATICALLY have three generations of impressionable schoolchildren been indoctrinated in the theory of evolution, and induced by imaginative writers to believe that it is an incontrovertibly proven fact--instead of being the mere unproven hypothesis that it is--that now if anyone dares to question the soundness of the theory, the public immediately classes him as a moron who has not yet gotten free from the superstitious cobwebs of the dark ages.

It is now apparent that every argument thus far advanced in behalf of the widely taught theory of human evolution has utterly failed. In doing this we will present the statements of famed evolutionists themselves to prove that their case really has broken down.

Dr. William Bateson, famous English biologist, and probably the foremost authority on genetics or scientific breeding, several years ago proclaimed his complete break with Darwinism. His words fell as a bombshell when he wrote in Science magazine the following: "Darwin speaks no more with philosophical authority....No evidence has been discovered to verify his genesis of species."

Since then Dr. Bateson repeatedly has declared his position to be that of one who accepts evolution only by faith, without any tangible evidence on which to base it.

He says:
"Do we, as a matter of fact, find in the world about us variations occurring of such a kind as to warrant faith in a contemporary progressive evolution? Till lately most of us would have said 'yes' without misgiving. The appearance of contemporary variation proves to be an illusion. WE have done with the notion that Darwin came to favor--that large differences can arise by accumulation of small differences....Modern research lends not the smallest encouragement or sanction to the view that gradually evolution occurs by the transformation of masses of individuals, though such fancy has fixed itself on popular imagination."

These damaging admissions by such commanding scientists as Bateson and Morgan, find corroboration also in "Readings on Evolution," by Prof. H. Newman of the University of Chicago. Though still adhering "by faith" to evolution as a theory, he says, at page 57: "Reluctant as we may be to admit it, honesty compels the evolutionist to admit that there is no absolute proof of organic evolution."
