UNEARTH - Endless

I remember the first time I heard UNEARTH. Derek, The Ninja, and I had just gotten back from Richmond, we went up there to catch the Avail show. Derek insisted on us coming up to his room to listen to this amazing band he had just discovered on Kazaa (yet another reason why I think MP3 sharing is a positive thing). We were pretty tired, but we decided to trudge up the stairs and listen anyways.

It was so worth it. He played the title track off the "Endless" EP, and I was blown away. Eulogy sent me the CD in the mail a few weeks later.

"Endless" starts off with a quick paced metal riff, and soon after breaks apart into some blastbeat backed guitar work. After that, the guitar bends and the spoken lyrics warn you that a breakdown is on the way, but nothing prepares you for what follows. The breakdown is one of the most engaging and intense ones I've ever heard. Haha, I've actually heard people singing this breakdown (dun dun dun dun... dudu dudu.. you get the idea). The rest of the song alternates between slow and fast parts, singing and screaming, and hits that same breakdown again, but twice as heavy, and with a metal-as-heck fingertapping solo over it. I can just see kids murdering each other in the pit when they play this live. Oh man. This is truly one of my favorite heavy songs... ever.

I debate on whether track 2, "Internal War," beats it out for my favorite on the CD, though. It's dang good as well. There's plenty more alternating between speed metal and slower parts that you'll surely find yourself nodding your head to, and then an awesome lead up to a breakdown that just rips the air apart. A whole chorus of voices scream "FOR WHAT" with an intensity that is hardly ever captured on a recording, before the guitars and the kick drum tear it up with a combination of lows and highs that will get you moving. If it doesn't, check your freakin pulse.

The rest of the CD is notable as well. I'll let you hear it for yourself though. The thing I like most about UNEARTH is the fact that they have one of the heaviest sounds around, but they still manage to have uplifting lyrics. Way to go, guys.

Yeah, I recommend this CD. If you like stuff like Turmoil mixed with uh... Most Precious Blood or something like that, then UNEARTH will rock you. It's metal, it's hardcore, it's freaking good. Oh, and the artwork was done by Derek Hess. Have I convinced you yet? Buy it now. Thank me later.
