Down and Out with the Dolls, a film on an all girl band in Portland opens today in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, Phoenix, and San Jose. It is directed by Kurt Voss who co-directed Border Radio and Sugar Town with Allison Anders and co-wrote Things Behind the Sun with her.

Dolls isn't a great film, but it is fun diversion. The music is pretty good. Some of the acting is pretty bad, but there are good performances from musicians including Kinnie Star and Coyote Shivers. Lemmy Kilmister of Moterhead is funny in a small part.

Rockerzine has an interview with Voss, DD Cheriel (Teen Angels, Juned) who provided the story based on her experiences, and Zoe Poledouris who plays the lead singer and wrote most of the music. Her father Basil Poledouris is a film composer who used a melody she composed as a child in his score for Conan.

This deserves a more complete write-up, but I'm a bit distracted by the war coverage. If it is playing near year, it might be a worthwhile distraction this weekend.
