U.S. TV station in Iraq provided by Christian evangelists

Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman write on zmag that the company providing equipment and services for the new U.S.-run satellite TV station says in its mission statement, "Grace News Network provides networking links and portals to various ministries and news services that will be of benefit to every Christian believer and seeker of truth."

Gee, I wonder how this contract happened?

Zmag:

The U.S. government this week launched its Arabic language satellite TV news station for Muslim Iraq.

It is being produced in a studio — Grace Digital Media — controlled by fundamentalist Christians who are rabidly pro-Israel.

That's Grace as in "by the Grace of God."

Grace Digital Media is controlled by a fundamentalist Christian millionaire, Cheryl Reagan, who last year wrested control of Federal News Service, a transcription news service, from its former owner, Cortes Randell.

Randell says he met Reagan at a prayer meeting, brought her in as an investor in Federal News Service, and then she forced him out of his own company.

Grace Digital Media and Federal News Service are housed in a downtown Washington, D.C. office building, along with Grace News Network.

When you call the number for Grace News Network, you get a person answering "Grace Digital Media/Federal News Service."

According to its web site, Grace News Network is "dedicated to transmitting the evidence of God's presence in the world today."

"Grace News Network will be reporting the current secular news, along with aggressive proclamations that will 'change the news' to reflect the Kingdom of God and its purposes," GNN proclaims.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), the U.S. government agency producing the television news broadcasts for Iraq, likes to say it is the BBC of the USA.

BBG runs Radio Free Europe, Voice of America, and Radio Sawa — Arabic language radio for the Middle East.

"Our mission is clear," BBG's Joan Mower told us. "To broadcast accurate and objective news about the United States and the world. We don't do propaganda, leafleting — we are like the BBC in that respect."

Well, then why hook up with Grace?

BBG's Joan Mower said that Grace Digital Media is a mainstream production house used by all kinds of mainstream news organizations.

"Grace will have nothing to do with the editorial side of the news broadcast," she said. "They are renting us equipment, space, studio. The Grace personnel we use include technicians, production people but no editorial people."

But Mower said she couldn't get us a copy of the contract between BBG and Grace Digital media. Nor could she say how Grace Digital was chosen as the production studio.

Grace News Network proclaims that it will be a "unique tool in the Lord's ministry plan for the world."

"Grace News Network provides networking links and portals to various ministries and news services that will be of benefit to every Christian believer and seeker of truth," according to the company's mission statement.

Actually, if you go to: http://www.ezbc.com/randell.html and read the court decision there, it's clear that Reagan, despite what appears to be a cozy relationship with the BBG, was justifed in forcing out Cort Randell of FNS. There is some dispute as to whether Randell actually founded FNS. There was a lawsuit that dragged on for years that charged Randell stole the company from the actual founder. I know there have been numerous lawsuits against FNS and Randell over the years charging various things. So seems like he and Reagan are just 'angels of a feather'.

Last year I deployed to Al Udeid Air Base Qatar from June to November in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was going to make something up because I really do not remember what he said he got that one for.

I decided, though, that wouldn't be right. So, I'll just let you imagine what it could have been. All I remember is that Marines will fight and win spectacularly (from a distance, of course), so long as you give them lots of creature comforts. Right or wrong, this system seems to work.

Many of the Commander Air Forces Central Command. (My Colonel was the go between from the 3 star ANG General and the 3 star AFRC general to the receiver. It won’t go back together either.

Trying not to worry I’m sure I can help him put his weapon back together. So we go back to his room were he hands me the disassembled weapon, and I see eye to eye on anything except the military, but he's still a great man. I found out today that he's off to Iraq and he's no longer in the military (but mostly him right now) deserve many thanks.

So, something I never thought I'd say.....Thank you Marc....Please, be safe. Marc is very religious and as everyone knows, I am not. In this case, though, I'll say that if there is a weapon free zone, I stored my weapon was up so the rest of the soldiers wake up whenever they want, go to eat chow, watch a couple of 82nd Airborne guys and they told me all about how most of the Army out here for a young man just out of place and launched the guide pin across the room.

At this point Col “Brother Bob’s” trailer inside the CAOC (Combined Air Operations Center) compound. I frankly forgot about the military (but mostly him right now) deserve many thanks.

Ripoffreport/EZBC Fraudulent Scheme

The Group of Criminals (Click here to see Criminal Architects) has created what appear to be two beneficial sites for consumers.

First Site

The first Site is Ripoffreport.com, which is a site that encourages unhappy customers and employees to post their complaints on the website. In order to post a complaint the victim must post and address, phone number, and valid email address. This is all to make sure the information is legit the company claims.

Once the Ripoffreport.com has duped the victims into posting a negative report, then the operation begins.

The first thing they do is try to sell the customer a pamphlet on how to attack companies. This book basically advises customers to harass and attack the company, especially to keep posting on Ripoffreprt.com. (Click here to see link for manual solicitation)

The second thing that Ripoffreport does is send emails to the posters asking for donations to help fight legal battles with these companies. They use a combination of guilt and veiled threats. We are being attacked by these companies because we just want to help you the consumer. Please help us; we can barely keep our doors open and our servers running. "Our legal costs will bankrupt us", they claim. Then the veiled threat; implying that the evil corporations do not want to sue just Ripoffreport, but also the poster of negative information. "We will do everything we can to protect you, we just need money for lawyers", they claim. (Click Here for a sample of the letters sent out by Ripoffreport.com)

After trying to collect money from the consumer then Ripoff charges a business $25 to respond to a complaint after the fourth response. To keep the responses going Ripoffreport emails every complaining consumer every time a complaint is responded to. This gets the consumers to keep complaining and forces the company to keep responding. If the consumer does not file additional complaints, RipoffReport simply makes some up. This forces the company to pay to respond.

Initially it stopped there and was just a run of the mill penny anti scam run by convicted felon Ed Magedson (He bills himself as "Editor" on the site). He probably wouldn't have attracted too much attention and could have continued this scam forever, but then they decided to go for the big dollars:

EZBC - Criminal Ed Magedson then joined forces with a group of criminals that formed the EZBC (Click here to see a list and history of the EZBC founders)

The name of the game is now blackmail. The system was designed to extort money from large companies (no longer satisfied with penny anti consumer donations), EZBC and Ripoffreport now targeted the deep pockets.

Once a consumer or disgruntled employee posted something negative about a company. Ripoffreport would then make sure that information was picked up by the search engines whenever anyone did a search for the company. Thus, anytime the company was searched on Google or Yahoo the negative information would be seen.

When companies showed that information was false or libelous, Ripoffreport then hid behind free speech (Click here too find out why this is not just free speech). It is simply people expressing their opinion; we have no control they would argue.

Then Ripoffreport would make the companies and individuals pay large sums of money to have the information removed or modified.

Companies, not wanting to get into protracted litigation and wanting to just clean up information found paying Ripoffreport cheaper than getting into a long drawn out legal battle. The settlements were typically in the $25,000 range.

Still not satisfied, Ripoffreport and EZBC have begun additional techniques to put more pressure on companies.

Past Records - If a company President of any officers or directors had ever had a legal problem Ripoff and EZBC hype the problem and post sites and excerpts from media articles that talked about the problem. Their goal is to make it look like the problem is with the current company. For example if an officer of a company had been investigated for a crime, even if he was cleared, they would make a big deal about the investigation and post news excerpts without ever saying that he was cleared. If the company tries to get out information that the officer was cleared or that the issue was unrelated to the current company, EZBC and Ripoff promptly post information saying that the individual used high priced lawyers or somehow evaded the law.

Guilt by Association - If they cannot find anything on the current owners, officers or directors of a company they would simply find an employee with a legal problem and hype the fact that the company was a bunch of criminals. Sometimes the employee would be a low level employee and the company would be forced to terminate the employee. In such cases EZBC and Ripoff start posting that the company finally got rid of the criminals only when it was attacked and that maybe other criminals lurked.

Guilt by Distant Association - EZBC and Ripoff have sometimes gone so far as to find companies that have vendors with a legal problem. Say company A hires Company B to provide services such a consulting or printing. If Ripoff and EZBC cannot find any dirt on anyone at Company A, but uncovers an employee of Company B with a legal past they will attack Company A saying it has criminals doing work for it. This simply expands their net, as no company can check the employees of every vendor it uses.

Taking Down Negative Postings - Some companies when attacked posted rebuttals on Ripoff. If the information was incorrect the company would simply dispute it. If the information posted was true or partially true the company would admit the problem and post how it was being handled. EZBZ and Ripoff would simply delete postings that corrected incorrect information, if the company had admitted to a portion of the wrongdoing, EZBC and Ripoff would simply post the companies admission everywhere. They take the admission out of context and point to them as proof that the company is an ongoing scam.

Creating Postings - In some instances the Ripoffreport and EZBC would simply make up negative information about a company and post it.

Involving Legitimate Media - By collecting both true and untrue negative reports Ripoff and EZBC have tried to incite legitimate media organizations to run stories about companies that they are pressuring.

Involving Law Enforcement - Sometimes by having enough false information posted Ripoff and EZBC have gotten real customers who might feel that they have been working with a legitimate company to believe that they have been duped. These companies then file real complaints. To put more pressure on the companies to settle Ripoff and EZBC will encourage these customers to file complaints with the Attorney General or other authorities. Once the Attorney General starts investigation the complaints they will immediately seize on this information to show that the company is being investigated.

Fabricating Documents - EZBC began the practice of making official looking documents. They made the page look like a BBB page, a lawsuit, or even a newspaper article. These pages would then be displayed on the site or through links.

All of these tactics were for one thing - to extort money from companies. They gambled that companies would prefer to pay hush money than gamble with losing customers or get into protracted litigation. There was also another problem with getting into protracted litigation. The EZBC creators hid behind the anonymity of the Internet. Ed Magedson would never allow his address or information out. When sued he told a Judge that he wanted to enter witness protection programs because he was afraid for his life.

How the tide is turning

BEIC is leading the charge against this group of criminals. Instead of each company having to fight the battle alone, BEIC has organized many companies and individuals who have had enough of being blackmailed and extorted. We are continuing to seek companies to join the fight.

* If you have posted on the site and have been solicited for money we would like to hear from you.
* If you have seen a Ripoff or EZBC posting and decided not to work with a company because of what you have read on one of these sites please let us know about your story.
* If your company has been victimized or attacked on EZBC or Ripoff we would like to hear from you.
* If you are a consumer and you are researching a company you should be skeptical of anything on these sites. Instead visit official government sites, the BBB, or the FTC website to check out a company (click here to link to actual government sites). Rip Off Report has proved a useful resource, as it does allow someone to research a company that, say, solicits your business by telephone. That said, I would certainly look at the NUMBER of complaints as well as the SUBSTANCE of the complaints before passing judgement on a business.

A business that generates a large number of complaints of a serious nature should be viewed with caution. I agree that some frivolous complaints appear and the threads of some fast-food and Wal Mart postings have gotten so ridiculous that if it were my site, I would remove them.

Yet there are companies (like modelling scams) that continue to generate a volume of legitimate complaints. The owners of these companies would rather discredit their critics, since they seem unable to offer an intelligent defense for the way they operate.

Most of the postings on the Rip Off Report are real people who could not obtain reasonable service by reasonable means. There are a lot of cranks too. My personal opinion: It would be a reasonable thing to do some checking and editing, as the site loses some of its credibility when unsubstantiated rants overshadow the honest reports. Still, I believe in the concept of providing consumer information.

Indeed, Magedson points out that: "The companies that end up suing me are the companies that are guilty," as honest companies can generally get GOOD publicity by public resolving of consumer issues.

Judge protects consumer rants

A federal judge has rejected a Wisconsin company's legal attempt to assail BadBusinessBureau.com, which features thousands of negative reviews from consumers who claim to have been "ripped off" by unscrupulous retailers.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb last Thursday granted the request from the operator of the Web site, which also goes by the name RipOffReport.com, to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed last August by cookware maker Hy Cite.

Because BadBusinessBureau.com does not have any offices in and had only limited contact with Wisconsin, it cannot be sued in the state, Crabb decided. The site had "not targeted Wisconsin citizens more than the citizens of any other state," Crabb wrote in a 13-page decision.

Ed Magedson, a self-proclaimed consumer advocate who runs BadBusinessBureau.com, said Hy Cite's reaction to criticism was typical of companies with something to hide.

"The companies that end up suing me are the companies that are guilty," Magedson said. "A company that is not guilty will come back and file a report. They'll file a rebuttal that says, 'This company did not do this or the company did do this. The customer is welcome to contact us because we want to satisfy our customers.'"

Magedson, who indicated he lives somewhere in Arizona, posts rebuttals provided by corporations but charges a $25 fee to post more than four of them. One complaint against Hy Cite, for instance, claimed it was "misleading and deceitful" for the company to refuse to cancel an order for its Royal Prestige cookware.

To avoid frivolous lawsuits, Magedson said, he has incorporated BadBusinessBureau.com on the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. In addition to not being bound by Wisconsin law, Magedson said, U.S. federal law says he is not liable for reviews posted by visitors to his site.

At least one federal appeals court has taken that view, ruling last year that Internet publishers should not be responsible for libelous comments they republish. Also, in the United States, truth is an absolute defense against accusations of libel or slander.

But the West Indies have no such free speech protections, and Magedson's legal strategy has backfired before. Alyon Technologies said in a statement last August that it sued Magedson in the West Indies and obtained a $10 million default judgment against him. Magedson claimed, however, he has yet to pay Alyon any money.

John Scheller, an attorney for Hy Cite at the law firm of Michael Best and Friedrich, said his client still hopes to secure an injunction against BadBusinessBureau.com.

"We haven't had a chance to fully analyze the opinion and whether to appeal," Scheller said. "We were trying to stop some of the statements on the Web site about my client. (We still hope for) damages and-or injunctive relief to stop them from making disparaging statements about our client."

Consumer Action has some good thoughts on On-line complaints.

The Beureau of Ethical Internet Commerce makes a valid point about angry ex-employees and competitors but usually these types of complaints are pretty transparent. The BEIC needs to address the issue of companies that generate a large number of real complaints because of their practices.

Agreed, this is an area that is a new frontier of ethics, but, as on most frontiers, a little common sense will take us a long way.

The Hy Cite Settlement is interesting reading and validates the position of Rip Off Report.

One Final Thought:
I Would Think Programming by Evangelical Christians Would be Preferable to the Typical American TV Fare, Which Muslims Would Most Certainly Find Vulgar and Offensive
Secondly, peace in the Middle East, in my mind, would involve some acceptance of the fact that Israel is a legitimate state!
Third, if we truely are a people who value free speech and the process that allows for it, then there should be nothing wrong with evangelical christians entering into that process.

Consumer Health Network

they have paid thousands of dollars to have ripoffreport change the banner on all of the so called complaints. They also claimed to investigate the complaints and the company. What a crock.
All that Ed Magedson and his gang did was take the money and run.
Don't let them get away with it.
Do not use the site. Go to the BBB(a reliable organization).

Ah, so it's "frank" again, is it? Post proof or stfu. You've posted this garbage all over the Internet, and still nobody's buying. Perhaps if you were a consumer advocate instead of some whiny loser who displeased enough customers that they complained you'd have an ounce of credibility.

And don't repost the same old garbage. Post REAL PERSONAL EXPERIENCES UNDER YOUR OWN NAME this time. Oh wait, you can't. Moron.

#12 — September 15, 2004 @ 11:08AM — Tiffany

Ed is a real interesting. He offered to post a story about my company to correct the negative postings by annonymous people for a mere $5,000.
I have witnesses to the conversation. At first glance this looks like a legit posting site- but you can check out prostitutes, adulters, etc., It's out of control and he unfortunatly controls the search engines.

Ripoff report is set up to blackmail people while helping the little guy. LoL

Hy cite case was dismissed because the judge saw that Ed business was supposedly set up in St. Kitts. They had no jurisdiction.

I have recorded proff of Ed on 4 seperate occasions three time telling me the only way to get these anonymous post removed or changed was to pay. He even agrees that the post are not about my company, but the only option I would have is to join his consume advocacy program(extortion). He wanted $840.00 per post which were about another company
Ripoff report probably does take consumer complaints, but it is set up now to extort money from innocent people.
Ripoff report is a extortion scheme run by convicted felons. Ed and his partners are currenty wanted in several state. he stays in hiding not for protection, but to keep his scheme going. He thinks there is some leftwing or rightwing conspiracy going on.(lol)

A hate site is characterized by webster's college edition dictionary as "a website created directly in purpose of pissing off other webmasters/mistresses, showing fake information and comments". There are many hate sites out there today. Bigotry and hatred thrive on ignorance, fear, false information and half-truths.

Conspiracy theories abound on hate sites, which often blame the groups they target for any number of social, economic or political problems. Such theories rely on their readers' ignorance, plus invented "evidence," to back up their claims.

KB Homes Says:
"The Internet makes it possible for a vocal few to broadly disseminate information that is unverified and often incomplete, inaccurate or out-of-date. We have earned a customer satisfaction rating of more than 95%, but we won't stop until that number is 100%. These sites are not designed to aid resolution. We encourage customers with any concern about their home to bring it to our attention directly. We contact customers that we are able to identify on the site and in cases where we have resolved any issues, the Webmaster of this site has refused customer requests to take down their complaints."

PayPal Says:
"We believe that people have a right to express their opinion. PayPal welcomes constructive criticism from members to help us continue to improve our service through our community discussion boards, chat rooms and Voices program. The problem with complaint sites is that the issues reported are sometimes out-of-date and have long since been resolved. Other times, customers may write complaints on the sites without trying to get their issues resolved through our customer service channels first. As a result, we can't confirm the accuracy of the information on these third-party sites. And we've found that they are not interested in providing a balanced view."

Wal-Mart Says:
"We have seen some corporate complaint sites. We don't spend a lot of time on them. The people on them think they gain an advantage by doing them. Some people simply do not want us to succeed. They feel they can gain an advantage by making us look bad. We know that there is misinformation about Wal-Mart out there. We launched our own Web site in January to make sure our facts are correct, Walmartfacts.com."

Verizon Says:
"What's really pathetic is not Verizon but this sort of lame Web site. In this day and age, anyone with a gripe can put up a Web site and make outrageous claims as the authors of this one did."

UAL Says:
"Our customers have a right to their opinions. We give customers an opportunity to come to us directly. The best way to get complaints resolved is to work with United directly."
